Congressman Chris Collins says he's been told in writing that the IRS won't require volunteer fire departments to comply with the Affordable Care Act's Employer Mandate.
The Western New York Republican says the IRS classifies volunteer firefighters as employees for tax purposes. He's been asking for months if that meant fire departments had to provide insurance or pay a fine under ObamaCare.
Collins says congressman says he got a formal response back from the Treasury Department this afternoon saying volunteer emergency responders are not subject to the mandate.
Collins was threatening to introduce legislation specifically exempting volunteer fire departments if he didn't get an answer.
