A waiver that had to go all the way to the White House has been signed, and that means victims and families of the West Webster Fire Department tragedy will finally get the donations collected for them nearly a year ago.
U.S. Senator Charles Schumer and Congresswoman Louise Slaughter say President Obama has signed the Fallen Firefighters Assistance Tax Clarification Act of 2013. It allows West Webster, and potentially other organizations, to raise funds on behalf of affected families without jeopardizing the fire department’s own tax-exempt status.
It was last December 24th that gunman William Spengler set fire to his house and car, then ambushed firefighters with a rifle when they came to douse the fire. Two firefighters were killed; two others and a police officer were injured.
