Several new state laws take effect with the start of the New Year.
Minimum wage workers will see a 75 cent hourly raise to $8 an hour. The increase was coupled with a new tax credit for businesses to offset part of their higher payroll costs.
The state's expanded gambling law also takes effect and starts the approval process for four casino resorts. And the governor's Start-Up New York tax credits take effect for new businesses connected to the state's colleges and universities.
And starting in the New Year, middle-income families with minor children will be getting $350 per year in tax relief.
