Mt. Hope Cemetery turns 175

The country's oldest municipally owned victorian cemetery turns 175 Saturday.

Mr. Hope cemetery was opend on Oct. 5, 1838 in response to a small pox outbreak. Back then, it was at the outskirts of Rochester. Eventually entire neighborhoods grew up around it.

Special commemorations and tours are taking place this weekend.

The events begin at 10:00 a.m. Saturday with an open house of the new cremation facility and then a tour of the historic south section, ending with a peek inside the 1912 Chapel.

Frederick Douglous, Susan B. Anthony and many of Rochester's great pioneers and leaders are laid to rest at the site.
